The Importance Of “Just Do It” In Social Media

How quick the uptake has been my 2nd time around

Our company has just hired a co-op student and she is currently working with me to help implement our social media initiatives.  What is amazing to me is that in less than two hours I had her create a gReader account for herself, follow some feeds relevant to our industry, adjust her “send to” settings for Twitter integration, and had her posting to our company Twitter feed.  And, in a matter of no time we had 16  relevant followers to our Twitter stream.  Amazing!  In less than two hours we had created a little Twitter ecosystem for our organization.

It took me a while to figure out what social media tools work and work well together

It has taken me personally about 2.5 months to finally figure out my Twitter, blogging, LinkedIn, and Facebook ecosystem.  And the ecosystem of what I have created for myself is not a perfect fit for everyone or every organization, but it is definitely working for me.  It has taken me some time though.  It has taken me time to figure out how to push from my gReader to Twitter.  Heck, it took me a while to figure out that gReader fit with the way that I work and what I wanted to accomplish.  It also took me a while to get my tweets to push through to my blog.  And, it has taken me a while to find my voice while blogging.  So it has taken me 2.5 months.  So what!  In fact, I am now of the opionion that it will take most people about two months or more to start gaining some traction with their social media efforts.

There is no way I could have figured out how my ecosystem should have been set-up without trial and error

No matter how much I read or how many podcasts I listen to, none of them put together a complete step-by-step list on how to create an ecosystem.  It has taken me a lot of experimentation.  And I don’t think my experimentation can stop because social media technologies are constantly changing.  You almost have to build in to your own daily routines something that encourages yourself to experiment, encourages yourself to get things wrong, and to keep trying till you find a new level in your ecosystem.

So, my question to you all is: What does your social media ecosystem look like?

  1. Although I completely agree that you need to experiment and use trial and error, I believe that before you start you should figure out what your social media goal is. Your goal should not be tied to a specific tool or even specific channel, e.g. twitter, blogs, etc but tied to your corporate or personal goals. Once you know what your end goal is you can start experimenting with different tools. And finally, just one word of caution. Everything you do with social media is public so if you mess up badly, it can be hard to rebuild your brand.

    1. Thanks for the comment!

I think the jury is out on how hard it is to rebuild the brand if you go down a wrong path. From my experience, people are more forgiving, and forgettful, than we think. The key is to be geniune and transparent, then it is easier for people to accept your re-tooling of your message.
